Yasawa North Secondary School

During my incredible 13-day journey to Fiji, known as the Land of Smiles, I had the opportunity to engage in meaningful community service while also indulging in the breathtaking paradise. Exploring the lesser-known Yasawa Island chain, I ventured to four distinct islands, uncovering the hidden wonders of Fiji that most tourists never encounter.

My involvement in two distinct service projects enriched my experience. The first initiative revolved around collaborating with local youth. I volunteered at a local island school, working with children to enhance the school’s facilities. Yasawa North Secondary School became a cherished memory, as I formed heartfelt connections with the students. On our farewell day, the students showered us with Salusalu’s, beautiful flower necklaces, and presented a captivating show of traditional Fijian dances and songs. The principal expressed gratitude, acknowledging that the windows we installed would ensure the school’s compliance and continued operation, benefiting numerous children residing in the Northern Yasawa islands.

Marine Conservation

The second project centered on marine conservation, where I actively participated in maintaining the marine ecosystem and contributing to a coral reef initiative. Immersing myself in the vibrant underwater realm, I developed a newfound appreciation for the ocean’s splendor. As our service came to a close, we had the opportunity to explore the Sawa-i-Lau Caves. These magnificent caves comprised two caverns adorned with turquoise seawater pools, replenished by the tides. The first cavern was easily accessible, as we descended a staircase into its well-lit expanse. However, the second cavern required an underwater entrance, leading us through darkness into its inner chamber. According to our guides, it was within this obscurity that we truly experienced the heart of the Yasawas.

Throughout our exploration of this awe-inspiring island chain, I dived into crystal-clear azure waters, swimming alongside manta rays, reef sharks, exotic fish, and vibrant corals. On my final day at Coral View Resort, the staff graciously taught us how to prepare a Fijian Lovo, an underground oven traditionally used for cooking large quantities of food during festive occasions and family gatherings. The evening unfolded with lively music, dancing, and an exhilarating game of mafia before retiring for a well-deserved rest.

This trip provided me with an authentic taste of the local culture as I explored limestone caves, savored traditional feasts, sampled kava, and visited various villages. It was a perfect blend of cultural immersion, adventure, and pure enjoyment, leaving an indelible mark in my memories.
