As a dedicated musician, I played the tuba as a member of the Great Neck North Symphony Band. Countless hours of practice in room 218 prepared me for an incredible opportunity! Carnegie Hall, renowned as one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, presented a remarkable challenge and honor for our band. Typically, there are two options to perform at this esteemed venue: renting the hall for $42,000 a night or receiving an invitation. Playing on Carnegie Hall’s esteemed stage in front of thousands of people was a lifelong dream for me and my fellow musicians.
Mr. Rutkowski, the Director of Instrumental Music at North High School, shared his own passion for Carnegie Hall: “Every serious musician dreams of playing at Carnegie Hall, the greatest concert hall in the world.”
The invitation arrived during a second-period Symphonic Band class when senior Madeline Yang was invited to open a sealed envelope. As the contents revealed an invitation to Carnegie Hall, excitement filled the classroom. The opportunity for a group of North High students to experience this iconic venue was unexpected and exhilarating.
The prospect of performing at Carnegie Hall left us buzzing with anticipation. I recall thinking we would never have this opportunity, but now we did.
With 163 instrumentalists vying for only 100 performance spots, auditions and dedication would determine who gets to take the stage. Leading up to the performance, we had several intense rehearsals to ensure an exceptional presentation on the March 1, 2020 performance. The dedication and passion exhibited by our group of Great Neck North High musicians impressed our conductor, Mr. Rutkowski, who commended our seriousness and love for both scales and great music.
This once-in-a-lifetime experience at Carnegie Hall holds immense significance for our band and orchestra members. It is an honor to be invited to perform at one of the world’s most famous music halls. My fellow students and I eagerly anticipate the chance to showcase their talent on such a prestigious stage, knowing the impact it will have on their musical journeys. For Mr. Rutkowski, the ultimate wish is for his students to continue attending concerts at Carnegie Hall in the years to come.

Through his dedication and skill, I achieved the remarkable distinction of being awarded All County. This prestigious recognition highlights his musical prowess and serves as a testament to his hard work, discipline, and commitment to excellence. My musical achievements continue to inspire and motivate others, solidifying his position as a true standout in the world of music.
